Regular consumption of grapes, blueberries, and the natural compounds they contain may help improve cardiovascular health, according to researchers who analyzed findings from dozens of clinical studies. The review was published in the journal Nutrients.
The authors examined data from 37 scientific studies investigating the effects of grapes, blueberries, and their polyphenols—natural antioxidant compounds—on risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Most high-quality studies found that consuming these fruits or their extracts was associated with improved blood vessel function, lower blood pressure, reduced inflammation, and decreased oxidative stress. Some studies also reported improvements in cholesterol levels.
Dark-colored grape varieties and blueberries attracted particular attention because they are rich in anthocyanins and resveratrol. These compounds may help reduce inflammation, protect cells from damage, and support healthy blood vessel function.
However, the researchers emphasize that the current evidence is not sufficient to conclude that eating grapes or blueberries directly reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular disease.
They also note that many of the studies evaluated concentrated extracts and dietary supplements rather than fresh fruit.
According to the authors, larger and longer-term clinical trials are needed to determine whether regular consumption of fresh grapes and blueberries provides sustained cardiovascular benefits over time.
