A new study published in the American Journal of Public Health examined whether a high intake of ultra-processed foods is associated with an increased risk of dementia and cognitive impairment in older adults.
The analysis drew on data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a large long-term study of aging in the United States. Researchers followed 5,370 participants aged 50 and older for an average of 8.7 years between 2013 and 2020.
During the follow-up period, investigators recorded 266 cases of dementia and 1,191 cases of cognitive impairment without dementia.
The results showed that participants with the highest consumption of ultra-processed foods had a 58% greater risk of developing dementia compared with those who consumed the least.
A similar pattern was observed for cognitive impairment without dementia. High intake of ultra-processed foods was associated with an approximately 46% higher risk of cognitive decline, while the combined outcome of dementia or cognitive impairment was linked to a 47% increased risk.
In contrast, minimally processed foods appeared to have a potentially protective association with cognitive health.
A separate analysis revealed that among the various categories of ultra-processed foods, only processed meat demonstrated an independent statistical association with increased risk. Other categories did not show consistent individual effects after adjustment for other factors.
The authors discussed several possible biological mechanisms that could explain the findings. These include alterations in the gut microbiome, increased inflammation, oxidative stress, and the potential effects of food additives. However, the researchers emphasized that much of the evidence supporting these mechanisms comes from experimental and animal studies rather than direct proof in humans.
The study also explored the role of social factors. Associations between ultra-processed food consumption and cognitive decline appeared stronger among individuals showing signs of social isolation, although the interaction did not reach statistical significance.
The researchers acknowledged several important limitations. Dietary information was based on self-reported data, which may be subject to recall bias. In addition, cognitive outcomes were assessed using screening measures rather than formal clinical diagnoses.
As a result, the study cannot prove that ultra-processed foods directly cause dementia. Nevertheless, the findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that dietary patterns may play an important role in long-term brain health and cognitive aging.
