Why are popular low-fat diets ineffective?

Popular low-fat diets are ineffective because they do not take into account the amount of sugar in foods. These diets may not meet the requirements for the growth and development of athletes, said nutritionist Kerry Torrens (UK).

A new study showed that in the US, more than 1 in 3 adults (34.9%, and 78.6 million) are obese. This trend is causing serious concern among doctors, and many argue that this problem needs to be addressed. Many nutritionists recommend low-fat diets to their wards, but its “100%” effectiveness has not yet been proven by science.

Kerry Torrens has repeatedly come across cases where a low-fat diet was useless and even led to a set of extra pounds. The problem is the amount of sugar not taken into account when making the menu. So, white bread, pasta, rice contain a large amount of carbohydrates, part of which the body cannot process and turns into fat deposits.

To avoid such problems, the specialist recommends excluding from the diet products that lead to the release of sugar in the blood, replacing them with baked goods from whole grain flour, brown varieties of rice or oats, pasta made from whole grains. The specialist also recommends preparing food yourself - this will allow you to control the ingredients and calories. Protein must be in the diet, such as fish and meat.
